Beyond Google!

A quick history lesson! - The Race for the most powerful Engine!

  1. Archie

    ~ September 1990

Archie indexed FTP sites, enabling users to locate downloadable files by name across archives, but it couldn’t display any content, relying on manual server updates and limited keyword searches.

  2. Yahoo Web Directory

    ~ January 1994

Yahoo Web Directory, created by Jerry Yang and David Filo, started as a categorized list of websites, evolving into a searchable directory, aiding users in finding organized web content that was manually curated by editors.

  3. WebCrawler

    ~ April 1994

WebCrawler was the first to index full web page text, letting users search any word, not just titles, becoming a widely known, public-facing search engine before being acquired by AOL.

  4. AltaVista -
    Natural Language Processor

    ~ December 1995

AltaVista’s natural language processor allowed users to search with conversational queries, offering fast, full-web indexing, advanced techniques, and inbound link checking, revolutionizing early search functionality.

  5. Ask Jeeves

    ~ April 1996

Ask Jeeves offered a natural language question and answering service, using human editors to match queries with sites, providing direct answers, later integrating crawler-based results for broader reach.

  6. Google

    ~ September 1998

Google launched as a fast & accurate search engine using PageRank to rank web pages by relevance and links, later adding features like autocomplete, ads, and AI, dominating global search for years.

Are you exhausted from constantly chasing elusive targets, jumping through various hoops, and using different search platforms to find potential customers? Are the changes in current search platforms. and searchers behaviour going to make this process any easier? That is an interesting question!

Can the new AI search ensure future success?

Moving Forwards ▶️ 2025 and beyond...

Since Archie first indexed all the available information on the public FTP servers back in the 90s, it has been vital for search engines to find it so that they can share it with the searchers.

Since then, search has changed beyond recognition; we have seen the coming and going of services like Yahoo’s Web Directory, the first web crawler, Alta Vista’s natural language processor (can you believe that was 20 years ago) – and then Google.

Google was crowned...

Google started on a private network in 1996 before launching to the broader world on September 4th, 1998. From the moment they arrived, they did things better and faster than the competition. Yet sometimes they didn’t lead the way; for example, Inbenta was the first to create a semantic search, one that could understand intent and contextual meaning behind the search terms, rather than relying on keywords themselves, but Google soon followed suit.

In that time, Google transitioned through different systems like the ‘Did you mean?’ & ‘synonyms’; they implemented Autocomplete, which allowed the users to see what others were searching for while speeding up their experience.

Other notable changes included indexing of stocks, flight details, patents and even movie times!

However, all these changes and updates, while they have improved the experience for most users, have created difficulties for businesses for at least the last 25 years.

Is that going to change? – Honestly, I don’t know.

That said, external sources are forcing some changes that will inevitably level the playing field a little!

Wouldn’t it be great if you, as a business owner, only had to worry about one thing that takes care of your real world and digital marketing?

That’s what FINALLY is happening, and yes, this is still an evolving situation, but the signs are positive.

The Evidence of Change!

AI-based search tools such as Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are transforming the way people conduct searches.

When someone searches Google, Bing or any other traditional search engine, they are presented with a list of 8-10 organic results (followed by many millions).

Simply put, these results show only the businesses who are able or willing to spend $ to be placed there.

As an example, if I search Google for “the best joiner for wardrobes near me”, I see 4 ads, the map with 3 top results, 8 organic results and another 3 ads.

Quite literally, Google presents us with 15 businesses to look at just on the first page(see the image). It would take hours of work to find out enough information about each one, to be able to make a sound decision about who you were to contact.

Should we still put our faith in Google’s ability to decide?

Whereas if I use ChatGPT with the exact search term, I receive this message

“If you’re seeking skilled joiners to craft bespoke wardrobes in York, consider the following professionals.”

This is followed by a list of 6, each with the business name, with site URL, its location, and a snippet about it. Things like…

“Specializes in bespoke joinery with an in-house design team, offering services from design to installation.”

“Established in 1995, this family-run business offers high-quality architectural joinery and fine woodcarving. “

This is followed by a statement that gives confidence:

“Each of these companies has a strong reputation for quality craftsmanship and bespoke solutions. I recommend reaching out to them directly to discuss your specific requirements and obtain quotes.”

Following those results, you could ask chatGPT for the top-rated business from the list and its sources. You’ll find recommendations on platforms like Yell, Google Business Profile, trustatrade, checkatrade, and Facebook.

This means that the AI search has done more than half of the work for you! – This explains why 25% of Brits (see The Times) used AI tools for online shopping as of December 2024, and Statista expects 90 million Americans to be using AI Search as their primary search tool within 2 years.

Why do I bring this information to you now?

why?

Reputation is King!

What is the one thing that business owners need to focus on?

I know you must have felt it. The frustration knowing that your competition, just because they have $ to spend on marketing agency’s SEO specialists, etc., who have spent hundreds of hours jumping through whatever hoops Google ask, and then hundreds more to pivot to whatever is needed after that year’s core update – they beat you to jobs, even the ones you are more skilled at, and have a better real-world reputation for – just because they are on that illusive first page of google.

You put all that effort into being a kind, respectable, fair, professional business, and yet you still get missed!

That is changing. – Remember the example of the joiner; interestingly, when comparing those 2 searches, only one name showed up in the AI search that was also on Google’s first page. Why? The businesses Reputation!

So what can you do now? How can you make the most of this change?

What next?

First, keep doing what you are doing in the real world, be the best, be the expert, be friendly, kind and fair.

Then, your online presence needs to be optimized for the new AI search, and when you see this list, you’ll understand my excitement that finally – FINALLY, search may have to be a fair playing field!

  1. Your website has to have clear and straightforward copywriting. You need to use the exact wording and terminology you’d use if explaining your work and benefits in person. No unnecessary jargon required!
  2. You need to get your website known across as many other websites as possible – it’s the only way to match your real-world reputation.
  3. Make regular press releases about services, products, case studies, and the like, and get the clients, where possible, to provide video reviews of work done to go along with the study. Then get that shared!
  4. Be religious about getting reviews. You need these to come in thick and fast; it doesn’t matter which service people choose, but honest and detailed reviews are the only reference the AI searches have to show how people actually feel about you, your staff, and your business!

And finally - the one most people don't want to even think about.

VIDEO!

Think about it – when you search, how often do you see Google share YouTube results, often before organic or even Local results. These videos, more often than not, are not paying for ads. They are organic results, with content that has been watched, liked and shared, with descriptions that describe the answers to people’s questions that the video answers.

Video results provide, on average, 10x more than search. But it’s also more interesting than that. When someone searches and lands on your website, you have to sell, sell, sell!

Video, though, is different – when someone searches and finds their answer on one of your videos, that generally leads to them looking at one or two more, and if you are engaging, fun, and an expert at what you do, they will likely return.

By the time they reach out to you, they are already sold on you as a person they respect, as an expert – meaning they already want you to do the work.

They are instantly a ‘qualified lead’ awaiting a contract!

Now that is REALLY EXCITING!
